Lisa Burns, PhD, OTR/L

Associate Professor, Doctor of Occupational Therapy 540-887-4061

Lisa joined the Mary Baldwin family in 2014.  She completed her Ph.D. in Human Development (with a specialization in higher education) at Marywood University in 2013.  While in that interdisciplinary program she received the William G. McGowan Medal for Excellence in Doctoral Studies.  Dr. Burns earned a master’s degree in Theology at the University of Scranton and received the Frank O’Hara Award for Academic Excellence in her studies.  She completed her Occupational Therapy bachelor’s degree with honors at Indiana University.

An occupational therapist for more than 30 years, Lisa has extensive experience that includes practice focused on older adults, rehabilitation team management, service as an Academic Fieldwork Coordinator, and teaching courses ranging from kinesiology, pathology, and physical dysfunction, to leadership, teaching and learning, and foundations of practice.  Long active in researching and presenting on topics related to professional development, Lisa’s current scholarly interests include interprofessional competency, professional identity, and spiritual formation.

As a veteran of the United States Army, Lisa holds a special place in her heart for those who serve or have served; she is married to an Air Force veteran.  Originally from Pennsylvania, she is now enjoying life as a ‘Virginia transplant’ and is happily learning the art of gardening in this beautiful Shenandoah valley.  Deeply committed to her faith, Lisa actively serves in her church and in the community.  She and her husband Brian, a newly retired occupational therapist, enjoy spending time together and with family and friends.  Since joining that first ÏãÃÛÓ°ÊÓ Occupational Therapy cohort, Dr. Burns has been inspired by her students and faculty teammates alike.  She remains especially grateful for opportunities to shape and be shaped by the next generation of Occupational Therapists.
