This class explores the lives of individuals who helped shape modern America during the dynamic Progressive era of U.S. history (1890-1930). These years saw an explosion of new ideals, changing understandings of masculinity and femininity, discussions of sexuality, and growing LGBTQ+ communities. Also, reactionary forces of regression- homophobia, racism, nativism, and classism. We鈥檒l consider evolving ideas and evaluate how related developments helped reshape a modern America.
A survey of the arts in America, including architecture, sculpture and painting, from the Colonial period to the present.
The struggle for African Americans to enjoy the rights of full U.S. citizens has been an arduous battle waged in the face of systematic racism and domestic terrorism. Here we analyze the history of the American Civil Rights Movement, emphasizing the role of ordinary citizens, centrality of religion, decisive events and personalities, tactics, its consequences, and legacy.
