The Honor Code

����Ӱ�� operates on the proud tradition of the Honor System. Honor is a personal quality that makes each student responsible for their own actions and fosters trust in one another and respect for truth. 

The Honor System is based on three principles: 

1. The integrity of one’s word
2. Respect for the property of others
3. Honesty in academic work 

These standards are an integral part of life at Mary Baldwin. In becoming part of the college community, each student willingly assumes an obligation and a responsibility to uphold them.

The Honor Pledge

“Believing in the principles of Student Government, I pledge myself to uphold the ideals and regulations of the ����Ӱ�� community. I recognize the principles of honor and cooperation as the basis of our life together. 

I shall endeavor faithfully to order my life accordingly. I will not lie, cheat, steal, plagiarize, or violate my pledge of confidentiality. I will encourage others to fulfill the ideals of the Honor System and will meet my responsibility to the community by reporting incidents of Honor offenses.”

The Honor Council

The Honor Council is a student board made up of one chair and up to seven representatives. Honor Council positions are peer-elected and filled through the Student Government Association elections or through Chair appointments. 

Members of the Honor Council are held to the same standards as all Mary Baldwin students. The Honor Council exists to educate students about the Honor Code, investigate alleged violations of the Code, and determine student responsibility when necessary.

Exam Guidance

The Mary Baldwin Handbook states:

“Each student is expected to do her own work in all academic endeavors. Giving or receiving help on academic work unless allowed by the instructor is cheating and must be reported. It is the student’s responsibility not to discuss a test or exam with a student who has not taken it.

To avoid the possible appearance of committing honor violations, students are advised not to possess or take any materials other than writing instruments and blank paper into any room where a closed book test or examination is being given or possess or take any materials not specifically permitted by the instructor into any room where an open book test or examination is being given.

Books and study materials should be left in the student’s room or outside the room where the test or examination is to take place.”

Exams Dos and Don’ts

Do:

• Respect the ����Ӱ�� honor code
• Expect to see honor council representatives and proctors on duty 
• Bring your exam card — it is your ticket for taking exams
• Take exams in the buildings where exams are issued and in the rooms with the appropriate color-coded designations 
• REMEMBER to respect the ����Ӱ�� honor code.

�ٴDz�’t:

• Bring bookbags or purses; notebooks; computers; cell phones; smart devices such as phones, tablets, and watches; or any devices with audio (e.g., iPods). Please leave these items at home or in residence halls.
• Don’t take exams in the following prohibited areas: faculty offices and lounge areas, computer labs, restrooms, elevators, hallways, and stairwells

The Code of Student Conduct

The ����Ӱ�� Code of Student Conduct identifies the rules governing student conduct and the procedures employed to investigate and resolve alleged violations of the Code.

The Student Conduct Board and the Office of Student Life are charged with the primary responsibility to regulate matters of student conduct in the University community. 

Failure to abide by Mary Baldwin’s Code of Student Conduct may result in sanctions, including termination of a student’s academic career.

The Judicial Pledge

“As a ����Ӱ�� student, I pledge to uphold the code of conduct by my words, deeds, and actions.”

Student Conduct Board

The motto of the Student Conduct Board is “Knowledge is Key.” This motto illustrates the expectation that all students who enroll at Mary Baldwin be knowledgeable and agree to abide by all of the University’s rules, regulations, and standards.  

The Student Conduct Board is a student board made up of one chair and up to seven representatives. Student Conduct Board positions are peer-elected and filled through the Student Government Association elections or by Chair appointment. Members of the Student Conduct Board are held to the same Code standards as all Mary Baldwin students. 

The Student Conduct Board exists to educate students about the Code, investigate alleged violations of the Code and, depending on the nature and severity of the alleged Code violation, to determine student responsibility and impose sanctions.

The motto “Knowledge is Key” means that all Mary Baldwin Students are expected to be informed about the Code and its standards and to conduct themselves in accordance with its conduct rules.

All student inquiries concerning the Code should be directed to the current Student Conduct Chair or to the Student Conduct Advisor and/or Director of Student Conduct and Development.

The Judicial System

All students who enroll at ����Ӱ�� agree to abide by the rules, regulations, and standards of the college. The college, in turn, will offer a degree to those who abide by the rules, regulations, and other requirements of the college and who meet the established standards, and will attempt, during the student’s tenure, to lend advice and support as solicited and/or as needed.
